The body of a 17-year-old gay teen has been found in a lake, following his disappearance after a Grindr date.
On 17 February, Orlando Boldewijn, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, reportedly used the gay dating app to meet someone, reports NL Times.
His body was discovered around 10.15am local time (9.15am GMT) on Monday 26 February, after he was reported missing six days earlier.
Divers located the body of Orlando in the Böttgerwater lake, in the Ypenburg district of Den Haag (The Hague).
Teenage boy went missing for a week after Grindr date
The boy could not be located from CCTV footage in the area, while Police combed the surrounding area for witnesses on Sunday.
A message was sent to Boldewijn’s mother, stating he was on his way home, just after midnight on the morning of the 18th February.
However, the messages were not consistent with other notes written by the teen.
His family reported him missing later that day.
According to reports, his phone and bank accounts remained unused.
Boldewijn’s friends say he frequently made dates using apps and websites, but he always returned home afterward.
Police have so far not stated how they are treating the case.
‘Acting on new information in the investigation, the fire department and police went into the water on Monday afternoon using sonar boats and divers,’ police said in a statement.
Grindr is one of the most popular gay dating apps in the world. It, and its paid-for version (Grindr EXTRA), are supposed to be for adult-users 18 years and older only.
The investigation into Boldewijn’s death is ongoing.
